The legend Of Prince Madoc

The legend Of Prince Madoc

At the Western end of the promenade adjacent to the house known as Odstone is the site of the ancient harbour Aber Cerrig Gwynan. According to legend the Welsh Prince Madoc set out from this now lost harbour and discovered America in the year 1170. The legend states that he landed in Louisiana and integrated with the local Mandin Indian tribe giving rise to the further legend of American Welsh speaking Indians. A fanciful story perhaps but it is widely celebrated in America by expatriate Welsh communities. The actual site of the old harbour is on the golf course but in antiquity this was part of the River Conwy estuary extending west wards past Mochdre to the present day Llandudno Junction. On a high spring tide one can see the level of the sea stands higher than that on the landward side and it is easy to see that this land would have been overflowed by high tides.

There are plans to erect a plaque or statue at or near the site and which will commemorate the legend.
