ST TRILLO’S CHAPEL
On the promenade is to be found reputedly the smallest chapel in Wales and perhaps has room for a congregation of 6. It is still in use and is said to have been founded by the Celtic Saint Trillo in the 6th century. It is built over an old well which is still to be seen beneath the altar. The parish church of St Trillo lies on higher ground to the south of the village and has a commanding view of the coast. It has a small additional tower atop the main tower said to have been used as a look out for pirates. The grave of Harold Lowe fifth officer on the Titanic and who acted with great heroism during the sinking is to be found in the church yard.
BRYN EURYN
This tree clad hill is prominent in the western part of Colwyn Bay and contains notable archaeological remains. In antiquity the hill would have been strategically important indeed a narrow pass on the southern flank of the hill was known as Nant Sempyr. It is said that the Roman general Gaius Suetonius Paulinus was killed at this spot when the XIV and XX Legions were ambushed as they were marching to quell the Druids on Anglesey. This Roman general was responsible for defeating Boadicea, Queen of the Icena after they rebelled against Roman rule. The hill fort of Dinerth (fort of the bear) stood on top of the hill and has been ascribed to the 5th century. On the lower slopes are the remains of LLYS EURYN an Elizabethan house built on the site of an older dwelling. This earlier house is thought to be the ancestral family home of the Tudors. To the west of Bryn Euryn is the village of MOCHDRE. The name means “pig town” in Welsh but the name is more likely to derive from old Welsh meaning “fast tide” reflecting that this little community in ancient times stood on the banks of a fast flowing tideway who’s course is now marked by the A55 and the railway.
