Geographical Location - Colwyn Bay is located on the North Wales coast between Llandudno and Rhyl. The town is north facing with countryside to the South.
THE BAY - The Bay itself extends from Old Colwyn to Rhos On Sea and has gently shelving sandy beaches making them ideal for recreational activities. Several are designated bathing beaches holding Blue Flag awards.
Colwyn Bay Origins - The town itself was conceived as a resort in 1860 and when 3000 acres of land were auctioned off and developement started. The town grew quickly, it’s stock of grand 19th and 20th century houses and buildings bearing testiment to the early inflow of wealth.
Climate - A beneficial feature of Colwyn Bay’s general environment is the temperate winter climate which prevails along much of the North Wales coast. Mean winter temperatures are comparable with those of the south English coast and result from being located in the lea of the Snowdonian mountains where the predominant south westerly winds are warmed through the air mass rising and falling over the mountains. This metrological phenomenon is known as the “Fohn effect” and some of the highest January temperatures ever recorded in Britain were obtained a few miles to the west of Colwyn Bay.
